    UPDATE: Announced Drop in Patent Applications Reveals Continued Lag in American R&D Investment
    WASHINGTON - In October, the New DLC released a report that revealed that American investment in research and development (R&D) was expected to fall 2.4 percent in 2009 - marking only the third time in 30 years that the nation has witnessed a decline. Today, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office released new data that shows that patent filings fell 2.3 percent in 2009, marking the first time since 1996 that applications have fallen.
